Supporting Earth Hour!

A report from Cebu Daily News

commended a mall, a fastfood chain, two hotels and an advertisers’ organization who switched off lights, billboards and signages in Cebu City last night to join the global movement Earth Hour, a one-hour “lights out” event that aims to fuel awareness on global warming.

Over 700 mall tenants of SM City Cebu expressed their support by turning out 50 to 75 percent of their light sources from 8 to 9 p.m., said Ma. Teresa Mempin, assistant mall manager.

More than 200 security personnel were fielded at the main mall, Northwing and car park to ensure that no untoward incidents could occur during the activity.

The mall employed a 100 percent and 50 percent lights shutoff schemes. SM logo, dropdown banners, photo billboards, pylon tower, landscape and advertising boxes were all turned off.

Only 50 percent of the lights in areas such as the covered and open parking, transport terminal, lobby lights, mall hallways and transport terminal were turned off.

Ariel Potian, regional customer relations service manager of Shopping Center Management Corp. (SM Supermalls), said the mall’s participation in this global awareness is through “turning the lights out” so that normal operations can continue.

“We have actively participated in activities that promote electricity conservation and thus, lower carbon emission. Environment is one of our key, priority areas in fulfilling our corporate social responsibility,” Potian said.

Members of the Outdoor Advertisers Association of the Philippines Cebu Chapter (OAAP) switched off the lights on about a hundred billboards maintained by the organization.

OAAP president Mary Ann Alcordo said the 12-member companies joined hands to push for the environmental initiative.”

Cebu City Marriott Hotel added a twist to the 60-minute event observed by different countries worldwide. They offered a seafood candlelight dinner buffet at the Pool Bar, Garden Café and Palm Lounge.

Fourteen Chowking stores in Cebu participated in the event. Chowking is an oriental fastfood chain under Jollibee Foods Corp.

Marlon Sison, customer care manager of Chowking, said all JFC member stores such as Greenwich, Delifrance and Jollibee also joined the event.

“Normal operations are not disrupted because we still have lights on. Only billboards, signages and pylons are turned off,” Sison said.

Waterfront Mactan officials said they had a 5-minute dry run yesterday at the lobby for the Earth Hour activity.

Cebu Daily News turned out its main lights in the newsroom, lobby and other offices as well in solidarity with the global initiative.

World Wildlife Fund encouraged the rest of the public to join Earth Hour and switch off their lights for one hour.

Earth Hour was launched in Sydney, Australia last year and was able to move 2.2 million people and 2,100 business establishments to turn off their lights.

The collective effort reduced the city’s energy consumption by 10.2 percent for one hour.

Playboy Launches In The Philippines

Playboy magazine is launching in the Philippines next month and will be targeting mature men who like well-written articles and tasteful photographs of semi-nude women.

"Maxim and FHM are called laddy magazines. We can be called a Dad magazine," Beting Laygo Dolor, Playboy Philippines' editor, told Reuters on Thursday.

"We are targeting a more mature market, Filipino men, 30 and above."

"There will be no full frontal nudity."

Mens' magazines with risque photos are already sold in the Philippines, which despite being a largely Catholic country has a macho culture that encourages promiscuity.

Although rural areas are more conservative, Manila and other large cities have a relaxed attitude to sex.

Dolor, who describes himself as a "bad Catholic," said the religion's values had influenced the decision not to go for a raunchier look for the magazine.

"I don't want to be ashamed to show it to my mother," said the father of four. "I have daughters in their twenties. It's something that I want them to also enjoy. I want them to be proud of their Dad."

Founded in 1953, Playboy has some 20 local editions around the world that cater to local taste rather than simply exporting and translating its U.S. content.

The magazine will be sold across the Philippines at a cost of 199 pesos ($4.76) and 70 percent of the content will be local.

Playboy's first edition in Indonesia in 2006 sparked protests although it had no nudity and less flesh visible in the issue than many other magazines on sale in the world's most populous Muslim country. Its editor was cleared of distributing indecent pictures last year.

Dolor said he didn't expect any uproar when his magazine hits the news stands on April 3.

"It's supposed to be a very good read," he said.

Former President Corazon Aquino, Mother To Showbiz Personality Kris Aquino And Widow To Assassinated War Hero Diagnosed With Colon Cancer

Breaking News Former President Corazon Aquino, Mother To Showbiz Personality Kris Aquino And Widow To Assassinated War Hero Diagnosed With Colon Cancer

According to the local paper - Inquirer -- Former Philippine president Corazon Aquino is suffering from colon cancer and is in a hospital, her family said Monday.

Aquino’s daughter Kris, a people television host and actress, read a statement on television saying the cancer was discovered when the former president went to have a check up.

A weeping Kris, with her brother, Senator Benigno Aquino III beside her, said their family is asking for “compassion and prayers for our Mom’s recovery.”

"Our mother had suffered from an episode of high blood pressure and difficulty in breathing followed by fever during the week in between Christmas and New Year. Since that time, we became concerned because of her consistent cough, loss of appetite and noticeable weight loss,” she said.

"Our mom wanted to know what was wrong with her, and with her family by her side, she submitted herself to a check-up and several tests. The results showed that our mother is suffering cancer of the colon," she added.

The Aquino family statement said it was the former president who wanted her condition made public because she “has always believed in being upfront. Over and above anything else, she's a woman who has lived her entire life entrusting everything to the Lord, and she has always been a woman of great faith.”

“Alam po namin na ang buhay ng aming pamilya ay bahagi na ng kasaysayan ng ating bayan. Desisyon po ng nanay namin na mag-release kami ng statement, para maunawaan ng lahat ang kanyang kasalukuyang kalagayan [We know that the life of our family is part of the history of our nation. Our mother has decided to have a statement released so that everyone will understand her present condition],” it added.

At the same time, she also asked that the former president “be accorded her privacy” during a “very difficult time for our family and, most especially our mother.”

“We’re saddened to hear the news about the condition of former president Cory Aquino,” Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in Malacañang. “We join her family and the rest of the Filipino nation in praying that God give her strength during this time of adversity and we pray for her speedy recovery.”

“I’m really sorry. We just have to pray that she’s not very, very serious,” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.

Opposition Senators Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and Francis Pangilinan said they are praying for Aquino's recovery.

“Keep the faith. You have loved our people beyond what many deserved. God in turn has loved you beyond compare. Bing and I pray God's blessing will ever be with you,” said Pimentel, who served in Aquino's Cabinet as minister of interior and local government.

“My family and I join the rest of the nation in prayer for former president Cory Aquino's complete healing. We also pray for strength and courage for the Aquino family as they face this difficult trial,” said Pangilinan, a party mate of Senator Aquino III.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez, who has been known to make biting remarks against Aquino, who has joined those seeking the resignation of Arroyo for alleged corruption, also wished the former president recovery.

"I wish her recovery...the darkest days of Holy week [have] has passed already," Gonzalez said, adding that colon cancer is curable.

Gonzalez said he has high regards for Aquino despite their disagreements.

"We may disagree on political matters but my regard for her as a person stays," said Gonzalez, who described himself as a good friend of the former president’s husband.

Aquino, 74, widow of the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr., became president after a popular uprising ousted the dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.

Her husband was assassinated on his return the country from exile in 1983. The murder gave birth to the protest movement that eventually led to the downfall of the 14-year Marcos dictatorship.

Philippines Airlines To Open Direct Flights From Cebu To Los Angeles

Hot off the presses of Cebu Daily News, those who are looking to travel from Cebu to Los Angeles will be in for a pleasant surprise as the country's flag carrier is planning to open flights from Cebu to Los Angeles (LA), California in late 2009 or early 2010 in response to the clamor of Cebuanos for direct flights to the US.

“We are still looking into the possibility of having a stopover (in Korea) or a non-stop flight to the US,” Jaime Bautista, president of Philippine Airlines (PAL), said in a press conference in Cebu City.

But Bautista said the Cebu-LA flight will only be possible if the Philippines' aviation safety rating will be upgraded to Category 1.

In January 2008, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded the country's rating to category 2 from category 1 after findings show that the Air Transportation Office of the Philippine failed to follow international safety standards.

Because of this, PAL cannot increase flights to the US.

Bautista, however, said he is optimistic that the approval of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines bill will help the country get back to its category 1 rating next year.

“When it's (Category 2 rating) lifted and upgraded (to Category 1), we can increase flights to the US,” he said.

News of the Cebu-LA direct flight draw positive reactions from travel operators as the flight will provide convenience especially to American tourists.

“That's what we've been waiting for. That will help increase tourist arrivals to Cebu due to convenience,” said Jenny Franco, president of National Association of Independent Travel Agencies-Cebu.

Alice Queblatin, president of the Cebu Association of Tour Operators, said it would be better if the Cebu-LA flight will be implemented soon.

“The earlier, the better because the market is ready for it now. The balikbayan market will get a big boost. With PAL servicing direct flights, we can expect more people coming,” she said.

“Leisure and business markets will increase not only in Cebu but other islands in the Visayas with Cebu as the hub,” Queblatin added.

Around 35, 000 Americans visited Cebu from June to July 2007.

Bautista said the company is stepping up programs to improve delivery of services.

He said PAL will lease a 6.6 hectare property at the Mactan International Airport for five years at the minimum.

“We have a team which has negotiated with the MCIAA (Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority). We met Friday of the other week and presented our interest to lease,” Bautista said.

In an interview, Bautista said PAL officials are scheduled to meet with MCIAA general manager Danilo Francia to inspect the property and finalize negotiations.

He said PAL will have a hangar and maintenance facility for the Q400, Q300 and Airbus 320 aircrafts in the said property.

Bautista told reporters that new aircrafts will be delivered from 2008 to 2012 including five Airbus-320s, two Bombardier Q-300s and six Boeing 777-300s.

“When all these airplanes arrive, we will have a total of 50 airplanes by 2012. This is the same number of airplanes we had before we filed for rehabilitation in 1999,” said Bautista.

He said these aircraft will increase the number of flights PAL is serving across different domestic, regional and international destinations.

Missing US sailor found drugged in Cebu motel

American sailor declared missing by his superiors from the USNS supply vessel was found yesterday morning by the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) police, at the Prince Court motel.

This poor guy is in for a very difficult time. Motels in Cebu have a very negative connotation, unlike in the US. A motel in Cebu is a pit stop for prostitutes and those who just want a few hours of unwholesome fun so to speak.

CPA General Manager Angelo Verdan said the initial report he received said it appeared Jude Michael Guido was drugged because he fell asleep at the motel for nearly three days straight, from March 8-10.

CPA police officer Felix Angelo Quianzon said that Guido brought two women to the motel but only one was there when they tried to pick him up. The woman disappeared before she could be identified.

Since he had no more money and was very weak, he decided to stay while seeking help from his family in New York. His family wired him some cash.

Quianzon said they transferred Guido to another hotel while they arrange for the Global Shipping Corp. to bring him back to the US.

They coordinated with US Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Cebu Chapter in looking for the sailor.

Nursing Student Killed Over Cell Phone In Cebu City

In the local news today, a robber shot and killed past midnight Thursday a nursing student just three weeks shy of her graduation over a P5,000-cellular phone.

Ruby Jade Magpatoc Ruba, 20, was attacked along Gov. Roa St. in Barangay Capitol, Cebu City. At the time of the attack, she was working on a case study she had to finish in order to graduate.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña offered P30,000 for the arrest of the gunman, who he hopes is not "another criminal on the rampage." He also said he will provide financial aid to the student's family and immediate burial assistance of not less than P5,000. That's not even enough to pay for her space in a decent cemetery.

Ruby, 20, hailed from Macrohon, Southern Leyte and temporarily lived in an apartment on B. Rodriguez St., Cebu City. She was scheduled to graduate from the Cebu Doctors' University on March 30, Ruby's brother Richie told reporters.

Ruby, daughter of Vicente Ruba of the Philippine Coast Guard Headquarters District Central 7, was the only girl of three siblings.

Homicide investigators led by SPO1 Jay Yballe learned that Ruby, together with a female friend were heading toward a dormitory on Gov. Roa St. (formerly Kamuning St.), Capitol Site to pick up the adaptor of a laptop they borrowed from a classmate.

Ruby was working on her case study, a graduation requirement.

When Ruby and her friend were near the dormitory, she sent a text message to inform her classmate that they had arrived. At that point, a man appeared and pointed a gun at the two women. Scared, the two ran in different directions. Ruby's friend told Yballe that a single gunshot was the next thing she heard. She saw her friend slumped on the dormitory's ramp.

The friend and the dormitory's security guard rushed her to the Cebu Doctors' Hospital, a few blocks away, but she died minutes later. A pouch where Ruby kept her Nokia cellular phone, a model worth about P5,000, was already gone. The armed robber reportedly fled on a red motorcycle driven by a cohort.

Ruby's brother, Richie, said that based on the autopsy performed by Dr. Benjamin Lara, PNP 7 medico-legal officer, the slug hit his sister's left side and tore out through her chest, before hitting the side of her left wrist. It pierced her lungs, liver, heart, and stomach.

He appealed to the police to identify and arrest the man who killed his sister. Ruby, he said, was looking forward to their class prom next week and had already picked out her class ring.

Her body will be brought back to the family's hometown in Southern Leyte Friday night. Whether or not there was a lapse in the police measures taken to secure the site where Ruby was shot is a matter the mayor and local police officers still have to discuss.

It's creepy but I have to point out how near B Rodriguez is to where I live. It's also sad and scary that we can't feel safe anymore. Just think about it, you could die over P5,000 or a cellular phone.

Cebu Motorists Again Suffer Increased Fuel Prices

Cebuanos will have to suffer once more increased fuel prices. For everybody who owns a car, let us all take a moment of silence as we say goodbye to our hard-earned money being churned into the endless smoke that pumps out of our engines.

Today's Sunstar reports that a 5O-CENTAVO increase in the prices of fuel shows that an oil tariff cut is “a useless mechanism” and will fail to protect consumers from abuse, an alliance of militant groups said.

As of midnight Saturday, oil firms Petron, Shell and Chevron raised the prices of diesel, gasoline and kerosene by 50 centavos per liter.

Arnold Padilla of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) pointed out that the change came barely a month since oil companies slashed diesel prices by P1 per liter.

“It confirmed our suspicion that the diesel price reduction last month was only for publicity to show government response to the people’s clamor to control and reduce oil prices,” Padilla said in a press statement aired by the GMA television network.

Various sectors and even legislators have called for the lifting the 12-percent value-added tax (VAT) on oil products, to help reduce prices of petroleum products.

On Friday, oil prices surpassed US$103 a barrel for the first time as persistent weakness in the US dollar and the prospect of lower interest rates attracted fresh money to the oil market.

“Due to the weakening dollar and the rising fear of inflation, investors have put money into commodities, oil included,” said Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.

“Commodities, as tangible assets, do not face as much inflationary threat as opposed to holding a currency,” Shum said.

“Even though the value of money is changing, the asset continues to have an intrinsic value.”

“Right now, there’s a lot of trading based on emotion— emotions are high and that could keep crude oil at elevated levels, but the market faces the risk of a price collapse.”

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries holds its next policy meeting on March 5. It is likely to decide to keep current production levels unchanged, or even cut production, according to reported comments by OPEC President Chakib Khelil.
